Violence against women is a leading public health problem. Every eight seconds a woman is abused. There are multiple forms of abuse. For example:
- Physical – punching, choking, slapping, kicking, pinching, tripping, biting, pulling hair
- Economic – does not let her know about or have access to family income, makes her ask or beg for money, takes her money, prevents her from working or sabotages her at work
- Sexual – unwanted physical contact, forced intercourse or touching
- Spiritual – uses her religion against her, told divorce is a sin, tells her that god is not there to help her
- Verbal – Name-calling, puts her down, calls her crazy
- Intimidation – makes her afraid by using looks, actions, gestures, destroys property, abuses pets, use of weapons
- Isolation – controls what she does, whom she sees and talks to, limits outside involvement
- Use of children – threatens to take the children away, uses the children to relay mean messages, uses visitation to harass her, will not let children receive medical attention until she does what he says, not paying child support, etc.
Women with disabilities are two to five times more likely to be abused than any other population.
